Senator Lindsey Graham finally had enough of Democrat stonewalling on addressing the humanitarian crisis at the border and took decisive action to help fix it.
Last week, Senate Judiciary Committee Dems were stunned when Graham moved forward with a bill meant to repair “broken laws” with the asylum process which they opposed and had used trickery to stall the legislation which is backed by President Trump.
The South Carolina Republican who serves as the committee chairman essentially forced the bill through over howls of angry protest from Dems who had deliberately deprived the committee of a quorum at a meeting last month.
Graham steamrolled the Dems to advance the Secure and Protect Act of 2019, which passed the committee 12-10 and now heads to the Republican-controlled Senate where it will face an uncertain fate thanks to turncoats like Mitt Romney, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.
I’ll no longer allow our asylum laws to be exploited by human traffickers, smugglers & cartels. My bill fixes this problem. Someone has to lead on the issue to repair broken laws. To do nothing is to maintain the horrific situation we find ourselves in today. That’s unacceptable. pic.twitter.com/cJtFdx3dp2

Via The Hill:
The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced a bill to overhaul U.S. asylum laws on Thursday, waiving committee rules to force the legislation through over objections from Democrats.
The Judiciary Committee voted 12-10 to send the bill, spearheaded by committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), to the full Senate, where it’s not expected to get the 60 votes needed to ultimately pass.
The decision by Graham to force his bill through the committee sparked outrage from Democrats on the panel, who accused him of busting up the rules on how legislation gets taken up in order to push through a partisan bill.
As Graham asked for a vote to formally schedule a time to pass his bill, Democrats protested and argued that Republicans were breaking the rules. Graham ignored them.
“You’re breaking the rules of the committee,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said as Graham directed committee staff to ignore Democratic attempts to speak ahead of the vote.
President Trump weighed in on Graham’s bill as well as his frustration with Democrat obstruction:
President Trump: “I would love to see the Democrats sit down and work out the loopholes in 20 minutes, ’cause that’s what it would take and work out asylum. We’re moving along with an asylum fix, an asylum bill. Lindsey Graham’s heading it up very capably.” pic.twitter.com/ErcFckigBf

Some of what Graham’s bill proposes:
- No longer allow asylum applications from residents of the Northern Triangle (El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras) to be filed at the U.S.-Mexico border. Instead, refugee processing centers would be set up in those countries and Mexico to handle processing.
- Extend from 20 to 100 the maximum number of days families could stay together in the United States while making their asylum claims. Democrats claim it would overturn a court ruling known as “the Flores Agreement” requiring the government to release children within 20 days and set minimum standards of care and housing for children.
- Add 500 immigration judges to reduce the backlog of cases.
- Permit U.S. border agents to return unaccompanied minors from Central America to their country of origin after screening, similar to the current process for children who come from Mexico and Canada.
After Graham deprived them of another win, committee Dems exploded and were led by 86-year-old Dianne Feinstein who was the culprit in the previous delay when she didn’t show up.

Then, further making an iron-clad case for term limits, 79-year-old Patrick Leahy went into a ridiculous rant that culminated in his tearing up the rules like a petulant child.
"Tear 'em up!"

Graham’s decision to finally call the Democrats on their B.S. may mark a turning point and definitely shows that the Trump ally is a man of action.
