Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said the 2020 presidential election should be held with larger numbers of ballots cast by mail this November.
“Absolutely. Vote by mail is the safest way to vote. And, right now, I would say almost every state has the capacity for vote by mail,” Abrams said Wednesday on MSNBC. “The challenge is that, in a lot of states, you have to have an excuse.”
Abrams, a Democrat who has been floated as a possible vice presidential candidate this year, has used her platform to advocate for expanded voting rights in America since losing her bid for the governor’s mansion.
After losing a razor-thin election in 2018, Abrams claimed widespread voter suppression led to a victory for her opponent Brian Kemp. She still contends she won the election.
Abrams said no governor in the country has a valid reason to require in-person voting in primaries and general elections with the coronavirus spreading rapidly across the nation.
“The reality is, everyone has an excuse: COVID-19,” she said. “We need to be certain that, even if things have tapered down by then, we have to prepare for it not to be so.”
House Democrats tried to include a provision for vote-by-mail funding in the $2 trillion coronavirus economic relief package Congress passed last week.
President Trump condemned the idea on Monday.
“The things they had in there were crazy,” Trump said during an interview with Fox News. “They had things, levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested Trump and other Republicans are not keen on the idea of voting by mail because they are afraid they will lose positions of power in the government.
“I feel sad that the president doesn’t have confidence, that his party cannot convince the American people about a path to go forward,” Pelosi said.
Abrams said an expanded vote-by-mail system ensures a more representative democracy.
“There needs to be safeguards to ensure that people do not have to provide unnecessary information, and we have to make certain that, for those who need to vote in person, that they still have the opportunity,” she said. “Vote by mail should be available to every eligible American, and we have limited in-person early voting.”
