Infectious disease expert and member of Trump’s task force, Dr. Fauci, testified before the Senate. In his usual, alarmist way, the doctor warned lawmakers that reopening the states might led to a “resurgence” of COVID-19. Republican Sen. Rand Paul would have none of the man’s nonsense. He held the doctor’s feet to the fire, telling him the facts.
At the early onset of the virus pandemic, Americans were looking for answers. While data suggested COVID-19 was much like the flu (expect is was less dangerous to younger Americans) some doctors tried to send us into a panic. We heard reports that the disease would take the lives of millions. Experts demanded that we lock down our country.
But after months of forced lockdowns, it appears most Americans are willing to take the risk and go back to normal. The data coming out shows the disease was not the end of the world. There was no “surge” that crippled our hospitals. In fact, the greater risk is keeping our economy frozen.
While many are saying this, one person who refuses to change his tune is Dr. Anthony Fauci. It appears Fauci was a leading voice in getting Trump to shut down America. The man, who has a reputation for alarmism and drama, continues to demand we punish Americans and especially school children. He suggested before the Senate that schools might not be able to reopen in the Fall. This, despite the fact that children face a near 0% risk from this disease.
Sen. Rand Paul, who has recovered from COVID-19, refused to accept Fauci’s narrow view. And he told him point blank, you don’t make that decision for us.
“I think that … we’re going to have a national one-size-fits-all approach — nobody’s going to go to school, is kind of ridiculous,” Paul told Fauci. “We really ought to be doing it school district by school district, and the power needs to be dispersed because people make wrong predictions.”
Senator Paul noted that the mortality rates have varied by region and criticized the experts for crafting policies based on faulty scientific models that have been largely disproven, some as recently as this week.
“We ought to have a little bit of humility in our belief that we know what’s best for the economy,” said Paul. “And, as much as I respect you, Dr. Fauci, I don’t think you’re the end-all. I don’t think you’re the one person that gets to make the decision. We can listen to your advice, but there are people on the other sides saying that there’s not going to be a surge, and we can safely open the economy and the facts will bear this out.” [Source: Daily Wire]
Many have speculated why Fauci continues to push for lockdowns that don’t make any sense. Some experts clearly state that lockdowns did nothing to “slow the spread” of the virus, since it appears to have been with us since last year. These lockdowns have only been affective at hurting the economy, robbing us of jobs, and punishing students’ academic careers.
Some have questioned Fauci’s motives. It might have something to do with the fact that he’s been a government official for years; he hasn’t practiced medicine in decades. It’s more likely he’s going with the lockdown route because it’s the “safer” choice, if your only concern is appearing wise before the media.
Honestly, we need more people like Sen. Paul, who are willing to question a narrative that is more and more becoming a leftist mantra. From the very beginning, we should have been more strategic with our shut downs, focusing on the most vulnerable. Schools should be able to reopen just as much as businesses.
Paul knows this, Americans know this. It seems the only person unable to see the light is an “expert” who will not be hurt one bit by prolonged shutdowns.
Should we still be listening to him?
