AG Barr Makes Good On Promise To Protect Religious Freedom

As the COVID-19 lockdowns spread across the country, many governors and local leaders targeted churches. Despite pastors developing new plans to stay safe, politicians had them arrested, fined, or shut down. The Department of Justice promised to defend America’s churches against these violations of their rights. And they’re making good on it.

You really have to wonder how any American leader can attack or persecute churches. But that has become a reality, thanks to the pandemic. Democrat governors and mayors have so little respect for the institution of religion, that they have deliberately targeted houses of worship. They deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics “essential,” but refused to let the faithful meet and worship.

It’s almost as if… Democrats are horrible, godless monsters!

Liberals have arrested pastors for holding services. Fined church goers for safely meeting in cars. The mayor of Chicago even raided a black church, sending in an army of police. Do you really think this was about “slowing the spread” of COVID, when we can safely buy groceries or go to restaurants?

Attorney General Barr has made it clear the DOJ will not tolerate attacks on Americans’ First Amendment rights. He’s promised to fight anyone that violates our right to worship. And his agency has been making good on that.

Attorney General William Barr set the tone for the U.S. Department of Justice’s attitude towards religious freedom during the pandemic by warning in an early April statement that “even in times of emergency,” federal law prohibits religious discrimination…

Since this statement was issued, the DOJ has intervened in multiple cases of government crackdowns on churches and pastors, specifically in Nevada, California, Oklahoma, Illinois, Virginia, and Mississippi. [Source: Daily Caller]

Here’s a few highlights of what the DOJ has been doing. In Nevada, Civil Rights Division Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband went after the governor’s 13 emergency orders targeting churches. The state allowed restaurants to reopen, but not churches.

In Illinois, the DOJ backed a lawsuit against the governor’s abuse of churches. Thanks to the DOJ, the case has moved to federal court, which will give the ruling more weight.

The DOJ has warned California’s liberal Gov. Newsom, that the state’s duty was to preserve religious liberty. Newsom allowed secular businesses to reopen, but not churches. After the DOJ’s involvement, the governor is revising his plans.

In every instance, we see a pattern. Democrat leaders pushed strict rules that singled out houses of worship. While other institutions were allowed to reopen or operate, churches were denied. Once the DOJ got involved, suddenly things began to change.

Those that continue to refuse will end up in court. And how do you think that will turn out? Religious freedom is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution. Judges will uphold that freedom, over a rogue Democrat’s mad grab for power.

These cases are important. We need the judicial branch of our government to check the power of state governors. A health crisis is no excuse to clamp down on liberties we’ve fought and died to protect. But it will take the courts to set limits on what governors can do in the future. Perhaps the Supreme Court will have to weigh in, determining how much power the executive branch really has.

Thankfully, it seems the DOJ is willing to fight this all the way to the end. Thanks to Barr, the Justice Department is not letting any church get left in the dust. He will make sure our most fundamental right is protected from tyranny.

And it has to be done. The next crisis might be right around the corner. Do we really trust Democrats not to rob us of freedom again?
