As Americans battle to preserve their own religious liberty, nations around the world suffer under intense religious persecution. In numerous countries, the government cracks down many religions, putting believers in jail or worse. President Trump has vowed to protect the religious liberties of all peoples. He signed a new executive order aimed at promoting religious freedom worldwide.
Americans must never fail to protect their God-given rights. On an almost daily basis we see far-left politicians trying to erode our most important freedoms, particularly the ones protected in the First and Second Amendment. Yes, we know all about how Democrats seek to destroy our right to bear arms.
But lately, they have sought to erode our basic right to worship. During the lockdowns, Democrats fined, arrested, and even raided churchgoers. These mayors and governors acted like jackbooted thugs, storming churches and throwing pastors in jail. This had nothing to do with the spread of a virus. This is what liberals have wanted to do to religious Americans for years. They just now have a reason to do it.
The violation of Americans’ religious rights, though, can be battled in the courts. If it even has to be taken to the highest court in the land, it will. But around the world, there are Christians, Jews, and sects of Muslims that have no power to stop the government from ripping their lives apart. President Trump is using his power to bring religious freedom to the world.
On Tuesday, President Trump signed an executive order supporting the advancing of religious freedom around the world…
“It is the policy of the United States to engage robustly and continually with civil society organizations — including those in foreign countries — to inform United States Government policies, programs, and activities related to international religious freedom.
“Within 180 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of State (Secretary) shall, in consultation with the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), develop a plan to prioritize international religious freedom in the planning and implementation of United States foreign policy and in the foreign assistance programs of the Department of State and USAID.” [Source: Daily Wire]
USAID is a humanitarian government agency. It is a major arm in the United States’ effort to provide relief and support to nations around the world. It specifically provides life-saving resources to war-torn countries and the third world.
President Trump is directing the Secretary of State to develop a plan to secure the religious liberty of citizens in country’s USAID works with. He has highlighted countries from a “Special Watch List” that have “engaged in or tolerated violations of religious freedom.”
Those countries include: Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. These countries were called out by the State Department last December for “systematic, ongoing, [and] egregious violations of religious freedom.”
Trump’s new order will empower the State Department to demand religious freedom in these and other countries. The Secretary of Treasury will also be empowered to impose sanctions on countries that refuse to comply. That goes beyond denying them aid through USAID. That suggests serious economic fallout, if these countries continue in a practice of violating citizens’ religious rights.
It’s no secret that people of faith are frequently persecuted around the world. But it’s odd that we’ve heard little about this from previous presidents. We offer aid and cooperation to countries that harm and oppress their own people. How can we not do something?
By signing this order, President Trump is defending not only Americans’ rights, but the rights of all the faithful around the world. This might bring a new era of freedom in countries sorely needing it.
