A last name linked with conservative news stands out on the list of donors who helped the Democratic Party and former Vice President Joe Biden raise $98 million in 2020’s second financial quarter.
James Murdoch and his wife, Kathryn, each gave $615,000 to the Democratic National Committee and the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s joint fundraising efforts between April and June, according to financial disclosure documents released late Wednesday.
George Soros was another notable figure who donated to the likes of the Biden Victory and Biden Action funds. The liberal billionaire philanthropist cut a check worth $500,000.
James Murdoch is the son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who founded what is now News Corp in 1980. Through News Corp’s sister company, Fox Corporation, Rupert Murdoch is Fox News’s current chairman.
Despite the younger Murdoch’s connection to the Fox empire and other conservative outlets, especially those in the United Kingdom, he and his wife have a history of contributing to left-leaning candidates and causes.
“There are views I really disagree with on Fox,” he told the New Yorker last year.
From 2007 to 2011, Kathryn Murdoch, for instance, worked for the Clinton Climate Initiative, which is associated with former President Bill Clinton. The couple also gave to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, with each of them giving roughly $83,400 to the former secretary of state, senator, and first lady’s joint efforts with the DNC.
This cycle, Kathryn Murdoch has already donated $1 million to the Senate Majority PAC, a group aligned with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer with the goal of winning back Democratic control of the chamber.
During the primary, James Murdoch contributed to former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s White House campaign.
By working with the DNC and Democratic state parties, Biden supporters haven’t been restricted by individual federal limits since May. They can write checks up to $620,600 for the Biden Victory Fund and $360,000 through the Biden Action Fund.
Wednesday’s disclosures indicate the cash race between Biden and President Trump has tightened. June’s totals mean Democrats have $242 million in the bank, Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon said Thursday. Republicans this month announced they had $295 million in their coffers.
“That means we’ve made a $100 million dent in his COH in three months — and we did it thanks to the power of our grassroots donors,” she tweeted.
But here’s some news: we have $242 million cash-on-hand. That means we’ve made a $100 million dent in his COH in three months – and we did it thanks to the power of our grassroots donors. https://t.co/vEnE3XSzAJ
