Democrats spent months rehearsing their talking points: "We don't want to give free healthcare to illegals." They practiced in the mirror. They tested it in focus groups. They had it down cold. And then Katie Porter walked onto the CNN debate stage in Monterey Park, California, and blew the whole thing up with a single word: "Yes."
That's it. That's the answer she gave when asked if she supports taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants. Not a dodge. Not a pivot. Just "yes." The Democratic Party's worst nightmare isn't a Republican attack ad — it's Katie Porter with a microphone.
The moment came during the CNN California gubernatorial debate on May 5, held at East Los Angeles College Auditorium in Monterey Park. Porter, the former congresswoman currently polling at a whopping 8% in the race, decided that what her flailing campaign really needed was to torpedo her entire party's messaging strategy on immigration.
She didn't stop at "yes," either. Porter went full send: "We can't afford to have people who are sick, who are making the rest of us sick." She added, "When anyone doesn't have care, the rest of us are at risk when people don't get vaccinations. When they don't go to the doctor, they wind up in the emergency room."
So let me get this straight. Illegal aliens are simultaneously "making the rest of us sick" and also the backbone of the California economy? Because Porter also said — and I wish I were making this up — "They're one of the only ways that our state has been growing in recent years." She called illegal immigrants "Californians" who "contribute to our economy" and "pay taxes."
Pick a lane, Katie. Are they disease vectors who need free healthcare or hardworking taxpayers propping up the Golden State? You can't have both.
Republican candidate Chad Bianco, the Riverside County Sheriff, cut through the nonsense with four words: "They shouldn't be here." Porter reportedly looked bewildered. Imagine being so deep in the progressive bubble that "enforce the law" sounds like a foreign concept.
Here's the part that should make every taxpayer's blood boil. California already became the first state in the nation to extend Medi-Cal coverage to all income-eligible immigrants regardless of legal status. Governor Newsom's budget allocated approximately $10 billion toward these expanded services. Ten. Billion. Dollars. For people who broke the law to get here.
And the Democrats at that debate? As reported by Louder With Crowder, every single Democrat asked about the issue said they support healthcare for illegal immigrants. Every one. Porter just had the decency — or the stupidity — to say it without the usual six layers of euphemism.
Meanwhile, Porter is sitting at 8% in the polls while Xavier Becerra and Steve Hilton are tied for the lead at 18% each, with the June 2, 2026 primary approaching fast. So she's not even winning. She's just burning down the house on her way out.
This is what happens when a politician is too dumb to lie and too radical to moderate. The Big Beautiful Bill is being debated in Congress right now, with healthcare and immigration provisions front and center. And Katie Porter just handed Republicans the best campaign ad they could have asked for — for free.
Democrats had one job: deny they want to give illegals free healthcare. Katie Porter just threw mashed potatoes on that plan. And the splatter is going to stick all the way through the midterms.
