Nearly 72,000 migrants (71,999) were apprehended at the southern border in the month of July according to a new report from the United States Customs and Border Protection agency, a sizable decline from the nearly 95,000 migrants (94,908) apprehended in the month of June.

These sizable figures are still less than the 132,870 migrants arrested over the month of May, but all are among the highest ever recorded monthly figures, ABC News reports.

Despite the decline, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan cautioned there was still an ongoing crisis at the southern border.

“The situation is improving by every available metric, but, I want to be very clear, that we remain at and beyond crisis levels in illegal crossings even as our initiatives to address irregular flows and mitigate humanitarian conditions are making an impact,” McAleenan said via ABC News.

Here’s more from the report:

During July, President Donald Trump’s administration was in talks with his Guatemalan counterpart Jimmy Morales to stem the flow of migrants reaching the southern U.S. border by crossing through Guatemala. The two countries reached a deal in late July, though it faces legal challenges.

In addition, there were almost 2,000 fewer unaccompanied children were apprehended from June to July, while family unit apprehensions were down by almost 15,000, according to CBP.

Single adult apprehensions also fell from 30,181 to 23,872.

McAleenan said that the reduced numbers have meant that the CBP has seen reduced waits at border stations and has taken fewer children into custody.

ABC News reports Trump has repeatedly used the word “invasion” to describe the nearly unprecedented number of migrant apprehensions:

Trump has described migrants from Central and South America, many of whom are seeking asylum from violence in their home countries, as criminals, gang members and rapists. But since as early as October last year, he’s repeatedly described their attempts to cross the U.S.-Mexico border as an “invasion.”

In January, Trump also described the situation as “an invasion.”

“I just got back [from the southern border] and it is a far worse situation than almost anyone would understand, an invasion!” he wrote in January.

“More troops being sent to the Southern Border to stop the attempted Invasion of Illegals, through large Caravans, into our Country,” Trump added into another tweet.

“The U.S. is ill-prepared for this invasion, and will not stand for it. [Migrants] are causing crime and big problems in Mexico. Go home!” Trump said in a tweet from November of last year.

“Many Gang Members and some very bad people are mixed into the Caravan heading to our Southern Border. Please go back, you will not be admitted into the United States unless you go through the legal process,” Trump said in a tweet from October. “This is an invasion of our Country and our Military is waiting for you!”
