America's Mayor Is Fighting for His Life — And We're Not Going to Forget What They Did to Him

Rudy Giuliani — the man who walked through the dust and ash of Ground Zero while the rest of Washington was still trying to figure out what happened — is in a hospital bed tonight fighting for his life. His spokesman Ted Goodman confirmed Sunday evening that the 81-year-old former mayor of New York City is in critical but stable condition.

So while we’re asking for prayers, maybe we should also ask a question: where was all this concern for Rudy when the left was systematically destroying him?

Goodman put out a statement that tells you everything about the man lying in that bed: “Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak.” He asked for prayers, support, and privacy. That’s the Giuliani way — head down, fight through it, don’t whine.

President Trump weighed in too, because of course he did. Whatever you think about the last decade of politics, one thing is undeniable — Rudy Giuliani stood next to Donald Trump when almost nobody else would. He didn’t flinch. He didn’t “evolve” his position when the media came knocking. He planted his feet.

And the left made him pay for it.

We need to talk about that, because the timing matters. This is a man who took New York City — a crime-ridden, graffiti-covered disaster in the early ’90s — and turned it into the safest big city in America. He didn’t do it with “community listening sessions” or by hiring diversity consultants. He did it by locking up criminals and telling the squeegee guys to get a real job.

Then September 11th happened.

While George W. Bush was being shuttled around on Air Force One (understandably), Rudy Giuliani was ON THE GROUND in Lower Manhattan. Covered in dust. Directing emergency services. Holding press conferences when nobody knew if another plane was coming. He earned the title “America’s Mayor” the hard way — by showing up when it mattered.

The whole country loved him. Time Magazine named him Person of the Year. Democrats praised him. Foreign leaders called him a symbol of American resilience.

Funny how that all evaporated the second he stood next to Trump.

Once Rudy became one of Trump’s most visible allies, the establishment decided he had to be destroyed. Not criticized — destroyed. They went after his law license. They dragged him through lawsuits. They painted him as a crazy old man on every cable news channel that would book a Democrat with a talking point. A federal judge hit him with a $148 million judgment that wiped out nearly everything he had.

One hundred and forty-eight million dollars. For the crime of being loud and loyal.

(Remember when the left said they cared about senior citizens? Apparently that has an asterisk: does not apply if you supported Trump.)

They took his apartment. They auctioned off his personal belongings. World Series rings. Signed jerseys from his time as mayor. Memorabilia from a lifetime of public service — sold off to pay a political debt that was really about punishing a Trump ally.

This is the same justice system that let Andrew Cuomo walk away from a nursing home scandal that killed thousands of elderly New Yorkers. But sure, Rudy’s the one who needed to be financially annihilated.

We’re not naive. We know Rudy made mistakes. He got sloppy in some of his legal arguments. He said things on camera that made us wince. Welcome to being 80 years old and exhausted after fighting the entire Democrat machine for half a decade.

But the punishment never fit the crime. The punishment was the point. They wanted to send a message to anyone else thinking about standing next to Donald Trump: we will take everything from you.

So tonight, as Rudy Giuliani fights in that hospital bed, we remember two things.

First — this is a man who ran TOWARD the towers when everyone else was running away. That kind of courage doesn’t expire. It doesn’t get erased by a CNN chyron or a bankruptcy filing.

Second — the people who spent the last five years trying to bury him alive don’t get to pretend they care now. Save your “thoughts and prayers” press releases, Democrats. We saw what you did.

Pray for Rudy. Pray hard. America’s Mayor has earned that much and a whole lot more.
