So it turns out Joe Biden — the guy who spent four years telling us he picked the most qualified person for every job — actually wanted Gretchen Whitmer as his running mate back in 2020. He flew her to Delaware, vetted her first, sat down with her face-to-face before anyone else. She was his pick. But then the Democratic Party’s identity politics machine fired up and told him he needed a Black woman on the ticket or else.
Shocker! The party that lectures us about “merit-based” everything picked their Vice President based on a demographic checklist. Who could have possibly seen that coming?
This all comes from a new profile in The Atlantic — not exactly a right-wing publication, by the way — which reveals that Biden’s camp felt “the moment called for a Black running mate.” That’s a direct quote from a former Whitmer staffer. Not “the moment called for the most competent candidate.” Not “the moment called for someone who could actually win a national election.” Nope. The moment called for checking a box.
And Whitmer herself basically confirmed she was ready to go. She told Fox 2 back in December 2020: “If Joe Biden had called and said, ‘I need you to be my partner and be my running mate,’ I would have said yes. This election was that important.” She was packed and ready. Biden wanted her. But the racial pressure cooker inside his own party wouldn’t allow it.
Now look — we’re not sitting here saying Whitmer would have been some kind of conservative dream. She’s the same governor who locked Michigan residents in their homes during COVID while her husband tried to sneak his boat into the water. She’s a Democrat through and through. But at least Biden genuinely wanted her. Kamala Harris was the candidate nobody wanted — not Biden, not the voters, and eventually not even the Democratic primary electorate, who bounced her out of the 2020 race before a single vote was cast.
Remember that? Kamala couldn’t even make it to Iowa. Her own party’s voters looked at her and said, “No thanks.” She polled at roughly 3% before she dropped out. And THIS is who the Democratic brain trust decided should be a heartbeat away from the presidency — and then, eventually, their nominee for the whole thing.
The funniest part is that Biden’s people are leaking this NOW. Why? Because Kamala lost. She lost to Donald Trump in 2024, and suddenly everyone in Biden’s orbit is scrambling to say, “Hey, that wasn’t OUR idea.” The knives are out. Biden’s camp is essentially telling the world: we knew she wasn’t the right pick, we were forced into it, and look what happened.
Well, yeah. We all looked. We watched Kamala give word-salad answers about “the passage of time” and “what can be, unburdened by what has been” for four straight years. We watched her cackle her way through interviews where she couldn’t answer a single policy question. We watched her run a presidential campaign so bad that even the mainstream media couldn’t drag her across the finish line.
And now we know Biden saw it coming. He wanted Whitmer — someone who at least knew how to run a state, even if she ran it badly — and his party told him no because she was the wrong color.
That’s the Democratic Party in one story. They don’t pick leaders based on ability. They pick leaders based on what they look like. They did it with the Vice Presidency, they did it with the Supreme Court (remember Biden promising to nominate a Black woman before he even had a shortlist?), and they do it with every appointment they can get their hands on.
And then when it all falls apart — when their diversity hire can’t win the big one — they leak to The Atlantic and pretend they had nothing to do with it.
We already knew Kamala was a DEI pick. The whole country knew it. But it’s awfully satisfying to hear Biden’s own people finally admit it out loud. Thanks for confirming what 75 million Trump voters figured out years ago, folks. Real brave of you — only took a historic election loss to find your honesty.
