Senate Democrats have been holding the entire Department of Homeland Security hostage for more than 40 days as of this week, and the grand result so far of Chuck Schumer’s master plan is… nothing. Zero policy changes. Zero concessions from the Trump administration. Just 61,000 federal workers who couldn’t pay their rent and a bunch of TSA agents literally selling their blood plasma to afford the drive to work.
Bravo, Chuck. Somebody get this man a participation trophy.
Schumer — the same guy who cried actual tears at a press conference about Trump’s travel ban back in 2017 — marched to the Senate floor at two in the morning and called ICE a “rogue and deadly militia.” These are the federal agents who pull children out of trafficking operations and bust drug smugglers at the border. But one ICE arrest in Minneapolis and suddenly Chuck’s out there doing his best Fidel Castro impression, ranting about jackbooted thugs.
(“Rules for thee but not for me” should really be the official Democratic Party slogan at this point.)
Here’s what 40+ days of hostage-taking actually produced. Senate Majority leader John Thune (the man actually in charge of the Senate) confirmed what everyone already knew — Democrats got nothing in their latest agreement. Zilch. Not a single policy change. Trump had already offered body cameras, school-zone enforcement limits, visible officer IDs — a perfectly reasonable deal. But Chuck said no because the White House wouldn’t budge on masks and warrants.
So he held out for six more weeks, starved the entire TSA workforce, and ended up accepting… the same deal he could’ve taken on Day One. That’s like holding your own kids’ lunch money hostage to negotiate with the principal — and then the principal just waits you out because your kids are the ones going hungry. This is what the Democratic Party considers “leadership.”
Meanwhile, TSA agents making $35,000 a year were sleeping in their cars at airport parking garages to save gas money. But hey — at least Chuck got to feel important up there at the podium.
Acting TSA Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill delivered devastating testimony to Congress about what Democrats did to these workers. Officers sold their blood to cover the commute. Single mothers couldn’t pay for childcare. More than 500 TSA officers quit their jobs entirely during the shutdown — and nearly half of them had over three years of experience. Democrats didn’t just shut down a department. They gutted a workforce.
One TSA agent named Rachel described having to leave her shift, pick up her child, and drive straight to the WIC office — the federal food assistance program for low-income mothers. “So I have to go get government assistance from the same government that I work for,” she told CNN.
A government employee. On government welfare. Because Chuck Schumer wanted to throw a tantrum about immigration enforcement. That’s the Democratic Party’s version of “fighting for working families.”
(Working families like Chuck’s, presumably — his net worth is north of $1.4 million on a Senator’s salary. Funny how that works.)
And the kicker? The ICE enforcement agents Democrats were supposedly trying to defund were already funded through 2029 by last year’s reconciliation bill. The officers actually out there making arrests never lost a dime. The workers Democrats actually cut off were ICE civilian support staff, Border Patrol desk workers, and every single TSA agent in the country.
Schumer punched down on the lowest-paid federal employees in America to grandstand about enforcement officers whose funding he couldn’t even touch. It’s like boycotting a steakhouse by refusing to tip the waitress. Classic Democrat move — hurt the little guy and call it moral courage.
The airports turned into complete disaster zones. Houston’s Hobby Airport saw 53% of its TSA officers call out sick on a single day. JFK averaged a 21% absence rate. Security lines stretched past four and a half hours — the longest wait times in TSA history. People were sprawled across terminal floors like Tom Hanks in The Terminal, except without the charming accent and the happy ending.
The Trump administration eventually sent ICE agents to airports to help manage the security catastrophe Democrats created. So ICE officers — who were getting paid — stood next to TSA agents — who were not getting paid — loading bins and scanning IDs together. ICE literally cleaning up the mess while Democrats screamed that ICE was a “deadly militia.” You couldn’t write a sitcom this stupid. NBC would reject it for being too unrealistic.
And this was the second shutdown Democrats forced in six months. The same workers who had just clawed their way back from a six-week funding lapse last fall got walloped again — eviction notices piling up, cars getting repossessed, retirement accounts getting drained to buy groceries. TSA workers missed more than $1 billion in total pay across both shutdowns. A billion dollars in lost wages for people making $35,000 a year.
Schumer said he was “very proud” of his caucus. Proud of what, Chuck? Proud that Democrats tortured 61,000 working-class Americans, accomplished absolutely nothing, and then lied about it on the Senate floor at 2 a.m. when they thought nobody was watching? That’s the whole Democratic playbook in one sentence — wreck everything, help no one, declare victory.

Millions of international visitors will flood American airports, and we’ll be running security checkpoints with a workforce that just lost 500 experienced officers because Chuck Schumer wanted to play resistance fighter on C-SPAN. When those tourists are standing in a five-hour security line at JFK this summer, somebody should hand them a pamphlet: “Welcome to America — brought to you by the party that claims to care about working people.”
Chuck will be in the VIP box, of course. He can afford the fast lane.
