Pro-Palestinian activists turned the Michigan Democratic Party’s spring convention into a full-blown circus this weekend when they heckled, booed, and literally chanted “Shame on you!” at Rep. Haley Stevens — a sitting Democrat congresswoman — for the crime of supporting Israel.
Welcome to the party of unity, folks. Grab a seat. It’s about to get spectacular.
Stevens took the stage on Sunday with a group of union workers, and the crowd erupted. Not with applause. With boos. With fists raised in the air. With the kind of raw hostility that you usually only see when someone cuts in line at a Costco gas station. Stevens tried to calm the mob with what might be the saddest sentence uttered in Democratic politics this year: “Democrats, I love you, even when we disagree.”
They did not love her back.
As she walked off stage, the chants of “Shame on you!” followed her like a soundtrack to the worst walk of shame in political history. And THIS is happening in Michigan — the swing state that Democrats absolutely, positively MUST win if they ever want to sniff the White House again.
So what exactly did Stevens do to earn the wrath of her own party? She supports Israel. That’s it. She takes money from AIPAC. She refused to kiss the ring of Hasan Piker — the far-left Twitch streamer who’s made antisemitic remarks and gone full pro-Hamas on camera. Stevens told Piker to pound sand, and now her own base wants her head on a platter.
(Imagine your political party getting so unhinged that rejecting a pro-Hamas internet troll makes you the villain. That’s where Democrats are right now.)
Meanwhile, her primary opponents are tripping over each other to see who can sprint furthest to the left. Abdul El-Sayed — who snagged a coveted endorsement from Bernie Sanders, because of course he did — has flat-out accused Israel of genocide. State Senator Mallory McMorrow is running a similar playbook. Both have pledged to reject AIPAC money, which in today’s Democratic Party apparently makes you a hero.
So now Michigan Democrats get to pick between a pro-Israel moderate who can’t even speak at her own convention without getting booed off stage, and two candidates who think the path to winning a general election in a swing state is to accuse a U.S. ally of war crimes.
Brilliant strategy. Really top-shelf stuff.
And here’s what makes this even more delicious: Michigan’s Senate race is rated a toss-up. The Republican frontrunner, Mike Rogers, has Trump’s endorsement and is sitting back watching Democrats torch their own coalition in real time. Rogers doesn’t even need to campaign right now. He can just retweet the convention footage and let the Democrats do his opposition research for him.
This is the fundamental problem with the modern Democratic Party. They’ve built a coalition of interest groups that actively hate each other. Pro-Israel Democrats and pro-Palestine progressives. Union workers and climate activists. Traditional Black church voters and far-left secular activists. It’s a powder keg, and Michigan just lit the fuse.
The funniest part? This is only the SPRING convention. The primary isn’t until August. These people have to share a party for four more months, and they’re already throwing chairs at each other metaphorically. By summer, the Michigan Democratic convention is going to look like an episode of Jerry Springer.
Republicans don’t have to do a single thing here. Just sit back, watch the implosion, and — like any good spectator at a demolition derby — enjoy the show.
