Neighbors, pay attention.
A registered sex offender — convicted in 2018 for possession of child sex abuse material — is now running for Fresno City Council.
Rene Campos, a Fresno native and Democrat, has launched a bid to represent District 7 in the 2026 primary election. Campos pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge in 2018 and completed what the courts labeled a “rehabilitation” process. He remains on California’s sex offender registry.
And now he wants a seat of power.
Here’s the post exposing his run for office:

Campos isn’t hiding from his past. In fact, he appears to be reframing it as a qualification.
“I’ve been given a chance to rehabilitate through the courts and go back into the system,” Campos told ABC 30.
He doubled down on that theme, saying: “They say let’s choose somebody outside the box, somebody who knows the system from the inside out, because me, I’ve experienced the laws that we are trying to reform right now.”
His campaign website reinforces the message with a slogan: “You are not your past.”
But many Fresno residents aren’t buying it.
Fresno County Clerk and Registrar of Voters James Kus confirmed that under California law, registered sex offenders are not barred from holding public office.
“Once you leave prison, you’re on probation, you actually are allowed in California to reapply and become a registered voter again, which would then make you eligible to run as long as you’re living in the proper jurisdiction,” Kus said.
Legally allowed does not mean publicly embraced.
Nav Gurm, another candidate for city council, raised an issue that many residents find deeply troubling.
“I think it should be a disqualification to serve in public office. If I’m the next councilmember in District 7 and I can’t show up to a school site, how can I best represent the people in the neighborhoods I want to serve?” Gurm said.
That question cuts to the core of the controversy.
City councilmembers routinely visit schools, youth programs, and community centers. If a candidate cannot legally step foot on certain properties because of their status on the registry, how can they effectively represent families?
Social media has erupted.
This fucking guy should be taking out back behind the wood shed .. wake up CA .. if ya all elect a man charge with possession of kid porn .. CA is doomed

Fresno City Council elections are technically non-partisan, meaning party affiliation does not appear on the ballot. However, Campos’ personal affiliation with the Democrat Party has been widely reported and aligns with his stated policy views.
This is not an isolated case. In November, a Democrat convicted child molester who pleaded no contest in 1998 to first-degree child molestation, sexual assault, second-degree child molestation, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor announced a run for mayor in Providence, Rhode Island.
California voters will ultimately decide.
